ABOUT THE ARTIST

Tobias Kaspar (*1984) is a conceptual artist. Since the early 2010s, he has received institutional recognition in the context of post-appropriation and institutional critique. Tobias Kaspar has realised solo exhibitions at Midway Contemporary Art in Minneapolis, the Kunsthalle Bern, the MadeIn Art Museum in Shanghai, Foundry Seoul, the MAMCO Musée d’Art Contemporain in Geneva, the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and at Artists Space in New York, among others. He has participated in group exhibitions at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, the Wattis Institute in San Francisco, the CAFAM in Beijing and the Museo d’Arte Contemporanea di Roma. His most important gallery exhibitions include presentations at VI VII in Oslo, Jenny’s in Los Angeles, Alex Zachary in New York, Silberkuppe in Berlin, Marcelle Alix in Paris, Galerie Peter Kilchmann in Zurich, Galerie Urs Meile in Beijing, Galerie Lars Friedrich in Berlin and Temnikova & Kasela in Tallinn. Kaspar’s work has been featured in leading art magazines such as Artforum, Frieze, Texte zur Kunst, Mousse and Flash Art – as well as in renowned lifestyle magazines such as Vogue Italia, Vogue US and Harper’s Bazaar South Korea.

ARTISTIC METHOD

In 2009, Kaspar initiated the magazine and publishing house PROVENCE, which has since developed into a collectively managed agency for art and research and regularly realises print and online publications as well as exhibitions and other projects. In addition to institutional formats, Kaspar continuously develops projects in other contexts – for example, long-term research within the framework of PROVENCE, such as on John Knight or Hannah Villiger. These serve not only as a reference in terms of content, but also as a critical examination of the conditions of production and reception in the art field. A recurring theme in his work is the relationship between surface and identity: Kaspar has long been interested in textiles, architecture and packaging – covers that both protect and represent. The critical scrutiny of authorship, individual signatures and the desire for uniqueness is a recurring theme in his work
