Wiebke Meischner

Wiebke Meischner is an artist from Essen who works with everyday phenomena and objects. These are often transformed and rebuilt, using different media such as objects, installations, or performances. She frequently works in collaboration with other artists, for example in the life-long karaoke video and performance project “Karaoke Stock Video presents…” with Eleonora Arnold.

With Kai Behrendt and Manischa Partowi, she hosts the radio show “Pre-Roost Radio,” which centers around their nature experiences in the Ruhr area. With Kai Behrendt, she also organizes group exhibitions in unusual to slightly odd locations under the name “Die Gruppe des Tages.” Since 2022, she has had an intense relationship with the jackdaws and, especially, the crows of her neighborhood, who are so much more than daily visitors at her window.

During the Borderland Residencies at Projektraum Kranenburg, Wiebke Meischner will work together with Oliver Gather. By chance, the two artists discovered their shared interest in birds. They approach the animals from different angles: Oliver Gather is particularly fascinated by the birds’ ability to shape diverse spaces through their songs, which can become vertical sound columns or expansive areas along the tree canopy. Through conversations with ornithologists and bird enthusiasts, and how these individuals in turn seek contact, a visual observation is explored.

Wiebke Meischner encounters birds with a very personal approach. She is especially interested in the bird as an individual and wants to observe how it uses its environment. In doing so, she primarily wants to examine objects that are man-made and repurposed by birds.

During the Borderland Residency, they want to follow these approaches together and work primarily with the medium of film. They will embark on joint birding field trips or engage in conversations with local NABU experts from the Kranenburg area.
