HUGO KOSTRZEWA
Hugo Kostrzewa (1982) is a visual, sound and food artist working between Rennes and Lille (France). Hugo Kostrzewa works with our senses, what runs through us, exploring the notion of what he calls matter in relation, and questioning our place as living beings entangled within other living and non-living worlds. He creates encounters between uses, stories, objects and people, observing carefully how they collide.
His installations and performances mix collective history, popular references, folklore, savoir-faire, science, social phenomena and often deals with what can’t be seen, heard, or named, and what has been forgotten but still haunts. He works with all kind of different people and situations, under the form of workshops, tastings, events, performances and so on. He considers food and gastronomy are accessible gateways to broader important questions, beginning by humanity's oldest one, “what's for dinner tonight ?” followed closely by “what will we eat tomorrow ?” and “what will eat us tomorrow ?”
For the past 10 years, he has investigated fermentation and particularly the koji fungus, on the basis of trips to Japan, Korea, Ireland and Poland. He’s also the co-creator of atelier du ventre, a pseudo mini factory which delivers strange items revolving around anthropocene related questions.
