Place of Residency

Kitty Maria (Ottersum, 1992) lives and works in Amsterdam. She obtained her BA in Fine Arts at ArtEZ and her MFA at the Sandberg Institute. She received the Emerging Talent Grant from the Mondriaan Fonds and various grants from the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, AFK, Gemeente Amsterdam.

Her work has been shown at Palais de Tokyo (Paris, FR), International Design Biennial (St. Etienne, FR), MK&G (Hamburg, DE), De Appel (Amsterdam, NL), TAC (Eindhoven, NL), Het Nieuwe Instituut (Rotterdam, NL).

Kitty Maria’s practice consist of sculptures, situations and scenarios that explore performance as an artistic tradition and an industrial norm. In the projects she regularly intervenes in companies or stores, to construct scenes on the shop floor that interrupt the daily ideology of work. The documentation of these interventions form a series of video works. Next to this she has an ongoing collaborative project researching modes of non-performance as an unemployed air hostess.

Project during Borderland Residencies

Femina Ludens encompasses the themes and thesis of Constants New Babylon in reaction to contemporary performance theory. The installation consists of activated and non-activated pieces that all carry a different attitude towards the pressure to perform.

In a non-linear collaborative text Kitty Maria and her sister Marieke van Ekeren reflect on the other in a post-labour condition, the capacity to perform, and feminist expressionism. In the exhibition these thoughts transcend into objects, videos, and costumes.
