FRANCISCO CORREIA
Francisco Correia (*Lisboa) lives and works in Brussels. His most recent solo shows are "NO STRESS" at Super bien! (Berlin), "Midlife crisis" at Galeria Nave (Lisbon), and "Eat the frog, swallow the ebb" at Cas-co (Leuven).
Together with Siebert Mispelon, Francisco is co-director of Double Minutes, a project which proposes to challenge the format of an artist talk.
Francisco's work has a particular taste for highlighting the absurdity of the invisible systems that agency everyday life. Work, economy and extinction (both individual and collective) are oftentimes taken into the realm of fantasy in order to create narratives that operate on the border of reality and fiction.
These ideas are mostly bound to an overall focus on storytelling and auto-fiction. Both writings and exhibitions are guided by narratives that shape the characters and environment in which they take place. In different bodies of work narrative is developed taking into account the specificities of the context and architecture wherein they are presented.
Project during the Borderland Residency
Year of participation
2024
For the IKOB residency, I intend to develop a project inspired by Bram Stoker’s novel "Dracula," with a special focus on the opening scene where solicitor Jonathan Harker visits Count Dracula at his castle to help him purchase a house in London. The fact that the story which popularized vampires begins with a difficult real estate negotiation sparked my interest in exploring possible narratives between gentrification and the supernatural.
I plan to work on a contemporary fantasy centered on the socio-economic struggles caused by housing market pressures and real estate speculation. The Meuse-Rhine region encompasses a diverse range of contrasts, from popular touristic destinations to historically industrialized areas, now featuring many facilities that could be reimagined as modern castles for Dracula.
