IKOB – MUSEUM FÜR ZEITGENÖSSISCHE KUNST

Francisco Correia
IKOB – Museum für Zeitgenössische Kunst is a museum of contemporary art located in the city of Eupen in the German-speaking community of Belgium.
The museum has been housed in a former furniture warehouse since 1999. IKOB’s programme of temporary exhibitions is dedicated to current trends in contemporary art with a focus on the art scenes of Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands. The exhibitions are accompanied by guided tours, events, and educational activities.
From its inception in the early 1990s, IKOB has been committed to creating space for contemporary art in East Belgium. The artist and curator Francis Feidler worked toward this goal for years, seeing IKOB, originally named “International Art Centre of East Belgium”, as a center for cross-border exhibitions. Today, IKOB is firmly anchored in the Meuse–Rhine Euroregion’s art scene and is considered one of the leading museums for contemporary art in Belgium. The museum also houses a growing collection of artworks.
IKOB stands for open exchange and conversation, programming and education that aim to be discursive rather than didactic, and a dedication to topics of urgent social relevance.

Eupen is close to the German and Dutch borders, with a direct bus line to Aachen (20km distance) and an hourly train to Liège and Brussels. Eupen is surrounded by forests and nature reserves, most notably the High Fens towards the South of the German-speaking Community.
The 2024 residency has the theme of SUPERNATURAL. Departing from an open understanding of the supernatural and its possible interpretations, the residency invites an artist to connect with the region through an exploration of the unseen, the mystical, and the otherworldly. The call for projects aimed for a direct engagement with local (hi)stories, the natural environment or geographical particularities through the lens of the supernatural.
The accommodation and studio are combined, with an apartment that includes a workspace (total size is 65 m2). The workspace cannot accommodate messy/dirt-producing production. The apartment is in a residential area of Eupen with 2 km distance to the museum and to the train station. It is situated next to the Hertogenwald forest.
