Tegelen is just south of Venlo and is part of the greater Municipality of Venlo. The city district has about 18,000 inhabitants, opposed to Venlo’s 40,000. Tegelen town centre has seen an increase of empty retail premises for years. ‘BIZ Centrum Tegelen’ has asked the town centre manager, along with his colleague from Blerick, to create a plan. In 2018, they wrote the plan ‘Samen Vooruit’ (Forwards Together) with as its goal the securing of a shopping centre that’s ready and prepared for the future. In May 2021, »BIZ Centrum Tegelen« and the town centre manger have presented a vision for Tegelen town centre to the municipality of Venlo. Adjustments to the design of the public space played an important part in the presentation. Leading is the strengthening of the recreational function: how to go from a ‘place to buy’ to a ‘place to be’? The addition of greenery is very much wanted. The vision will be available as a magazine from 13 July 2021 onwards.
In what way can we boost the attractiveness and recreational function of Tegelen town centre by adding greenery?
The vision offers a number of strategic locations where a beacon, marking, or place to rest could be placed:
On the Wilhelminaplein square next to the ‘Martinuskerk’ (St. Martin’s Church), one end of the Kerkstraat nearby, as important shopping street.
On the square in front of the ‘Raadhuis’ (former town hall), the other end of the Kerkstraat nearby, as important shopping street.
The entrance of the shopping street, as seen from the ‘Raadhuis’.
The small square halfway on the shopping street, as a stepping stone location.
Making a connection the ‘DNA of Tegelen’. Tegelen has been known for its ceramics production (mostly roof tiles and pottery) for many centuries.
Attention for ‘storytelling’: how to shape the ‘journey’ a visitor to the town centre of Tegelen makes?
The location around the ‘Oude Raadhuis’ (Old Town Hall) will be changing mid-2022 with the addition of 2 new supermarkets (Jan Linders and Aldi) and 21 apartments. It’s a good reason to also tackle the change of the public space there.
