Every year at the end of August, the ‘Zomerparkfeest’ (Summer Park Fest) takes place in Venlo: a free four-day festival with a broad programme containing music, literature, dance, visual arts, and science. The ‘Zomerparkfeest’ is very popular and was visited by no less than 100,000 people in 2019. Some parts of it are aimed specially at certain groups, like senior citizens or entrepreneurs.
The ‘Zomerparkfeest’ is completely organised by volunteers. These are pooled into different commissions, including a sustainability commission. The costs of the ‘Zomerparkfeest’ are taken care of by sponsoring, subsides, and catering profits.
The ‘Zomerparkfeest’ is striving to organise a festival that is as sustainable as possible, including all aspects of the festival. ‘Zomerparkfeest’ considers itself to be a testing ground for new concepts and ways of working. Instead of mentioning problems, the festival prefers to convey a hopeful message and to show what -is- possible.
One of the main concerns is the impact the festival has on the Juliana Park where the festival takes place each year. A four-day festival, especially when it’s wet outside, is detrimental for the park’s grass. After the festival, the grass is re-sown, but, unfortunately, the grass is still too weak when the next edition takes place again. Furthermore, other events, albeit smaller ones, also take place at the Juliana Park throughout the year and they also have an impact on the area.
In what way can we boost the attractiveness and recreational function of Tegelen town centre by adding greenery?
There will be a food court and brewery (beer) in the former Museum van Bommel van Dam building (Deken van Oppensingel 6). If it will have a terrace, it will probably have some interaction with the park.
As a regular ‘player’ of the Juliana Park area, the ‘Limburgs Museum’ can be involved too.
We are focusing on the 2022 edition of the festival for our ‘event’. The 2021 edition can be used as an introduction, to gain first input, or to test a first idea.
Use Edition 2021 for artist to test first idea(s).
Connections with ‘Zomerparkfeest’ programming are possible, via programming commission.
The ‘Zomerparkfeest’ will also organise the ‘Boerenbruiloft’ (a creative recreation of a traditional 19th-century well-do-to Venlonian farmer’s wedding during the Vastelaovend, the Limburgian Carnival). A connection can be made with this event too.
