A wind farm was planned in the vicinity of Venray as part of the energy transition. After two years of preliminary research, the municipality cancelled the plans due to strong protests from local residents: there will be no windmills in Venray.
Research shows that the vast majority of Dutch people believes that we will have to change the way we generate energy in the future. The majority also agrees that more sustainable energy sources such as solar panels and wind turbines are an indispensable source of this. However, the majority of Dutch people also do not want these wind farms and solar meadows to be located in their neighbourhood. We know we need it, but don’t want it in our sight.
The research in Venray revealed a surprising age gap: the majority of residents under the age of 35 are in favour of windmills in their own neighbourhood. The majority of those over 65 are opposed. The young inhabitants, however, will logically have to live with the windmills for a much longer time. However, in protests and public hearings, it is mostly the elderly who speak out.
How can we make visible how young people see their living environment in the future?
A relevant but sensitive topic that is currently being discussed in the whole of the Netherlands.
An interesting opportunity to activate young people.
A subject that is now mainly in the hands of communication agencies. An artistic/creative approach has not yet been attempted.
The outcome of the project can take place/be displayed at various locations in the landscape.
