OPENING OF BORDERLAND RESIDENCIES 25/26
Date:
Sept. 1st
Museum Schloss Moyland
We started with a guided tour of the current exhibition, 'Marina Abramović and MAI – in dialogue with Joseph Beuys' which is presented in collaboration with the Marina Abramović Institute (MAI). International performance artists delved into Joseph Beuys’ archive and Moyland’s collections, building on a month-long research residency at ArToll Kunstlabor in March 2025 to create site-specific, long-duration performances that reveal new perspectives on Beuys’ legacy and highlight its impact on modern performance art. Antje-Britt Mählmann (Artistic Director at Museum Schloss Moyland) and Annika Hardy (the Research Fellow) provided exciting insights into the creation and background of the multifaceted exhibition, supported by two participating artists who are also taking part in the Borderland Residencies programme: Francesco Marzano and Michelle Samba, who discussed their experiences and working methods within the project.
Following the tour, all the participating artists and residencies introduced themselves, sharring impressions of their previous work and their plans for the upcoming residency period. Once again, the wide variety of locations and people involved in this programme became apparent.

After that the plan for the joint programme in the coming months was presented by the team, including field trips, day trips and prospects for a joint final project. The evening concluded with a relaxed, informal dinner together at the Hotel Elaya, providing an opportunity for networking and making new connections.
Day two began with a guided tour of the Kurhaus Kleve museum, whose rooms are currently closed to the public. Curator and Deputy Director Susanne Figner provided exclusive insights into the museum's origins and the rooms' early use and distinctive features. The tour took place in an almost private atmosphere: some works were draped or packed away, while others remained accessible, creating an inspirational landscape that encouraged reflection. Lunch and dinner were once again on the agenda in the afternoon to further strengthen the common goal and openness to collaboration. The opening activities were characterised by a welcoming, exploratory atmosphere that emphasised connections, mutual learning and cross-border exchange, and made us look forward to the coming months.
