RENÉE STRAVERS
Renée Stravers (Amsterdam, 1990) is an interdisciplinary visual artist based in Amsterdam. She uses photography, video, and installations to explore the nature of perception. By using our environment as an exploration tool, she investigates the role of space within the framed image and the interaction between reality and perception. By playing with perspective and approaching our environment from unusual angles, she aims to challenge how we perceive our surroundings through conceptual structures and what we might experience if we let go of these concepts.
Project during Borderland Residencies
Year of participation
2024
I envision a project that continues my current research about how physical space relates to mental space.
Our immediate environment, infrastructure, and (vacant) architecture are my main starting points; I work in and with space, and my work coincides with it. The changing environment, and therefore context, is something I incorporate in my work to question how we perceive our surroundings.
One topic of special interest for me will be the contextual reality of working in a new environment. I will continue to research the deconstruction of images in this environment and try to return them to an essence that sublimates their contextual confinement. I am looking forward to further exploring my large spatial work during my residency in Heerlen, as well as how we tend to perceive our different environments
