Founded by Maarten and Reina van Bommel van Dam in 1971 in Venlo, museum van Bommel van Dam was the first museum for modern and contemporary art in the province of Limburg, the Netherlands. The couple gifted their collection of around 1100 artworks to the city on the condition that they would be allowed to live next door. Their residence even had its own private access to the exhibition spaces.
52 years later a lot has changed. A new course for the future of the museum has been set, the collection has grown to consist of over 14.000 objects, and in 2017 the museum said goodbye to the original building and moved into the renovated, monumental, former post office. In September 2021 the museum reopened to much fanfare and visitors could again experience a divers exhibition program of modern and contemporary art, design, and projects in various public spaces.

Venlo is a beautiful city with around 100.000 inhabitants in the province of Limburg, situated neighbouring the Western Ruhr Area and broader Euregion. It is a vibrant place and there is always plenty going on. When you leave the museum, take a stroll through the medieval town and explore what makes Venlo unique. Gaze at historic façades down narrow streets and wander down to the River Maas. Venlo is packed with culture and has something for everyone, young and old, live music fans to museum aficionados. Even those who prefer a peaceful, green setting can find the perfect spot: head out of the city centre and in no time at all you’re surrounded by nature– on either side of the border.
Museum van Bommel van Dam believes it is important to support local artists and offer them a platform. This is one of the ways in which the museum works on a better production and artistic habitable climate. In addition, it helps residents and inhabitants from the region to see and recognize local talent and thus gain confidence in their own creative environment. Museum van Bommel van Dam is participating in BR for the fourth time this year. During this period it has seen the importance of the network, not only offering assignments or a podium, but also facilitating an expansion in network, contacts, friends and like-minded people. Agata Siwek will create a number of workshops within the education and participation department of the museum, will appear in an upcoming exhibition with pieces from the collection of museum van Bommel van Dam and will take an autonomous place as an artist-in-residence.

The last artist in residence Rosa Vrij (NL, 1994) was traveling through the province of Limburg for HOUSE III, an exercise in mindfulness and in an attempt to find out what makes a house a home. This is a central concept Vrij means to interrogate during her residency, and the fruits of her labour will be connected to a solo exhibition of the work of architectural photographer Machteld Schoep (August 15th 1962 - May 15th 2019, Venlo). Throughout her career Schoep skilfully centred human beings in her architectural photographs, something quite unusual considering her field of work. Mecanoo Architects, Schoep’s employer, applauded her for her unique perspective. In the end, architecture is an object in which we live, work, dream, and experience. The exhibition at museum van Bommel van Dam will focus on its beauty as a space, the people in it, and the architecture surrounding it. Rosa Vrij will react to these topics and formulate a response grounded in her own artistic practice.
Museum van Bommel van Dam has no studio or accommodation. A planning and program will be made in dialogue with the participating artist.
